Sanchez Library is built and Ronald Reagan becomes president of the U.S.

1999

City of Pacifica joins San Mateo County Libraries Joint Powers Authority.

2001

San Mateo County Library Joint Powers Authority adopts Building Projects Policy to support and partially fund initial planning steps for new libraries.

2004

Pacifica Library Foundation is formed.

2007
A Great Community Deserves a Great Library

“A Great Community Deserves a Great Library” report issued by Pacifica Friends of the Library and Pacifica Library Foundation.

2010

Pacifica partners with San Mateo County Libraries to conduct a needs assessment as the first step in designing a new library to better meet community needs.

2011

Pacifica, San Mateo County Libraries, Pacifica Library Foundation, and Pacifica Friends of the Library develop a conceptual design and cost estimate for a new library at Beach Blvd site.

2012

Group 4 Architecture holds public design meetings. Pacifica Library Foundation, Pacifica Friends of the Library and Pacifica conduct a poll to measure support for a new library.

  • Results show 60% recognize the need and support the idea of a bond measure to fund a new library.
2013

San Mateo County Board of Supervisors authorizes funding for library planning for cities like Pacifica.

  • $500,000 is made available with a local match of 1:3. $129,000 of City/community funding necessary.
2014

Furnishings and Equipment Funding Policy that says San Mateo County Libraries will contribute $50/square foot for the furniture/equipment in new libraries.

June 2016

Pacifica hires an architect to begin schematic design of Beach Blvd library.

July 2016
August 2016

City Council decides to put a construction funding measure on the November ballot.

November 2016

Measure N receives 55% of required 66% vote.

2017

City Council directs Library Advisory Committee to develop public outreach, revisit analysis of library service assessment, revisit site options and analysis, and develop service model options.

2018

Pacifica Library Opportunities Report is published.

  • Confirms current and future needs for library services, reaffirms Facilities Needs Assessment findings.
2019

Pacifica Libraries Conceptual Design Report approved by City Council.

  • Recommends two branch system for Pacifica, replacing Sharp Park on existing site and renovating Sanchez for “Open Access” model.
March 2020

Library Advisory Committee meetings suspended and Library Project public outreach put on hold due to Covid-19 pandemic.

January 2023

Pacifica Library Foundation disbands and transfers funds for new library planning and construction to San Mateo County Libraries Foundation.

December 2023

Library Advisory Committee re-constituted and resumes meetings.

Construction begins on San Mateo County Libraries’ first Library Outpost at the Sanchez Library.
